Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to question specific calls from the official, following the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
