The British broadcaster committed a "serious breach" of broadcasting rules by not revealing that the voice of a programme about Gaza was the son of a Hamas administrator, as determined by British broadcasting authority Ofcom.
An probe by Ofcom into the documentary titled Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has found that the programme was "substantially inaccurate".
The chief executive of the broadcaster had already issued an apology, stating there had been "a significant failing in relation to truthfulness".
The regulator has directed the BBC to air a evening announcement about its conclusions.
"Given this constitutes a serious breach of our code, we are ordering the broadcaster to air a announcement of our findings against it on BBC2 at 21:00, with a schedule to be finalised," the statement read.
'Possibility to Undermine Trust'
The watchdog's report declared: "The inquiry we conducted found that the programme's omission to reveal that the narrator's father held a post in the Hamas-controlled government was significantly deceptive.
"It meant that the viewers did not have critical information which may have been very significant to their judgment of the presenter and the information he shared.
"Trust is at the heart of the bond between a television network and its audience, especially for a public service broadcaster such as the public broadcaster.
"This error had the potential to undermine the very considerable amounts of confidence that the public would have put in a BBC factual programme about the Israel-Gaza war."
The programme was removed from the online platform in the month of February after the boy's personal associations were revealed, and in this past July an corporation's own inquiry concluded it infringed the broadcaster's editorial guidelines on accuracy.
A representative for the broadcaster stated: "The Ofcom ruling is in line with the results of Peter Johnston's review, that there was a serious error in the programme in relation to the corporation's content standards on factual correctness, which reflects regulation 2.2 of the authority's broadcasting regulations.
"We issued an apology for this and we comply with the authority's determination in complete. We will adhere to the penalty as soon as the timing and wording are finalised."
