A group of seven alleged members of German far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind targeting locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
